Welcome to Tech Talk, a new source of information to help our district and your club do more, more easily using technology, information and procedures provided by the district or other common resources. Tech Talk provides you with a convienant starting point when technology is involved in communicating, collaborating, educating and supporting Rotary activities.
In today’s information age, state-of-the-art technology can provide easier means and increased convenience in running your club. As well as enhance the accuracy, security and breadth of information used to support your club and its goals. Both the Rotary International (RI) and our District are using more and more technology to lessen the burdens of running their organizations which leads to local clubs having to follow suit. Therefore, District 5510 added Tech Talk as a place for you to go to better understand these technologies and how you can use them to your clubs advantage.
Tech Talk is simply a common place for all of us to gather information and collaborate on how use it.
Let's start by understanding the basic of what Tech Talk is talking about (no pun intended). Most organizations are using an approach called content management system (CMS) which is the collection of procedures (a system) used to manage work in a collaborative environment. These procedures are designed to:
- Allow for a large number of people to contribute to and share stored data
- Control access to data, based on user roles. User roles define what information each user can view or edit
- Aid in easy storage and retrieval of data
- Reduce repetitive duplicate input
- Improve the ease of report writing
- Improve communication between users
In a CMS, data can be defined as nearly anything - contact information, documents, movies, pictures, newsletters, emails, memberships, training materials, links to websites, etc. In our approach (joomla) these are all contained in what we call articles. The content is virtually boundless and easy to use and share.
For instance, the words you see highlighted above are linked (connected through the Internet) to provide anyone with further information about the topic without cluttering the main point of the article you're reading. These links took me all of a minute to make for you and we don't have to maintain the content! We can do the same with information used by RI, our District and your club information, and more!
